Zika fever

A fever is a rise in body temperature that can happen with many infections and inflammatory conditions. Zika fever may come with a widespread rash, sore joints, headache, or red eyes. Some people with Zika do not develop noticeable symptoms, so the absence of a rash does not settle the question.

Travel destination, mosquito bites, contact with unwell people, and the sequence of symptoms all matter. Respiratory symptoms such as cough, wheeze, or a blocked nose can point clinicians toward other causes, including a common cold, COVID-19, acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, or croup.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and monitor changes in symptoms. Note your temperature, rash appearance, joint pain, and the dates and locations of recent travel. Avoid mosquito bites so that, if you have an infection spread by mosquitoes, it is less likely to be passed on locally.

Before taking pain or fever medicines, ask a pharmacist or clinician which option is appropriate for you, particularly if dengue or another travel-related infection has not been excluded. Pregnant people, young children, and people with long-term health conditions should seek tailored advice.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, a seizure, confusion, a severe headache, fainting, stiff neck, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or signs of dehydration. These are warning signs regardless of the suspected infection.

Arrange a clinical review soon for fever after travel to an area with mosquito-borne illnesses, or for fever with rash, marked joint pain, pregnancy, or a worsening general condition.

Ask whether your symptoms and itinerary suggest testing, which medicines to avoid until a diagnosis is clearer, and what changes should trigger urgent review. Tell the clinician about other travellers with you and any relevant pregnancy or medical history.
