What should you know about zika bite?

Mosquito bites are common in many travel destinations, and the appearance of a bite cannot show which mosquito caused it or whether it carried a virus. Zika virus may be spread when an infected mosquito bites a person. Many people with Zika infection have no symptoms. When Zika causes illness, it may present with a rash, fever, joint pain, red eyes, or headache. These symptoms can also have other causes, so a diagnosis needs clinical context rather than the bite alone.

Continue protecting yourself from further bites: use repellent as directed, wear clothing that covers exposed skin where practical, and keep mosquitoes out of sleeping areas. Make a note of where and when the bite occurred, your destinations, and any symptoms that follow. Rest and fluids may be reasonable for mild illness, but avoid choosing medicines based only on a suspected diagnosis. If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or have a partner who is pregnant or planning pregnancy, arrange individual advice about possible exposure and sexual precautions.

Arrange a GP consultation for fever, rash, red eyes, joint pain, headache, or feeling unwell after travel to an area with possible Zika transmission. Explain where you travelled and when symptoms began. Seek prompt medical advice after a possible exposure in pregnancy, even if you feel well. Emergency assessment is appropriate for severe headache, confusion, new weakness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration; these can signal a serious illness that needs immediate evaluation.
