Zero Gravity Treadmill Physical Therapy: What to Know

Equipment and setting used in Physiotherapy

Short answer

Zero gravity treadmill physical therapy reduces the weight carried through your legs while you practise walking and exercise.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main purpose
Practise walking with less load through the legs

A physiotherapist sets the support and exercise level
Not a diagnosis
It supports rehabilitation but does not identify the cause of symptoms

What the treatment means

The treadmill uses an enclosed air chamber around the lower body to gently support part of your body weight. This can make stepping, balance work, and repeated walking practice feel more manageable when full loading is uncomfortable or difficult. A physiotherapist adjusts the support, speed, incline, and exercise time to match your movement and symptoms. The approach may be considered during rehabilitation after an injury, surgery, weakness, or a period of reduced activity. It does not replace assessment of the cause of pain or weakness.

What to do before and during therapy

Wear secure exercise clothing and shoes, and tell the therapist about pain, dizziness, numbness, skin problems, or changes in walking. The therapist may first check your strength, balance, walking pattern, and ability to step onto the equipment safely. During the session, hold the support as directed and report sharp pain, increasing pressure, unusual shortness of breath, or loss of balance. Progress commonly involves gradually increasing the amount of weight carried or the walking challenge rather than forcing a normal pace immediately.

When to seek care

Stop the session and seek prompt clinical advice for new severe pain, a fall, sudden weakness, new loss of sensation, chest discomfort, fainting, or breathing difficulty. Contact your rehabilitation team if swelling, bruising, or pain keeps worsening after exercise or if you cannot put weight through the limb as instructed. Sudden calf swelling with warmth or breathlessness needs urgent assessment.

Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist

Ask what goal the treadmill is intended to support, how much unloading is appropriate, and how progress will be measured. Also ask how it fits with strengthening, balance practice, and home exercises, and what symptoms should make you stop. If your rehabilitation involves Achilles Tendinitis, an Ankle Sprain, or Cervical Spondylosis, ask how that condition changes the plan.

Questions people ask

Is a zero gravity treadmill the same as walking without gravity?

No. The chamber reduces the load you carry, but gravity remains and your muscles still work during stepping.

Can everyone use this treadmill?

Suitability depends on strength, balance, symptoms, medical history, and safe access to the equipment. A clinician should screen you first.
