The sensor compares how light passes through blood in the finger to estimate oxygen saturation and to detect pulse. It is a screening measurement, not a diagnosis. A reading can be affected by cold hands, movement, poor circulation, nail products, finger position, and how well the device fits. The number should be considered with how you feel, your usual health, and any condition that affects breathing or circulation. A normal-looking reading does not override severe symptoms.

Sit quietly, warm cold hands, remove nail coverings if practical, and place the device securely on a clean fingertip. Keep the hand still until the display settles, then record the value together with the time and symptoms. Repeat only if the first result seems inconsistent with how you feel or if the device signals a poor reading. Share a log with a clinician rather than changing prescribed treatment based only on a home measurement.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips or face, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or difficulty speaking in full sentences. Seek urgent assessment when breathing symptoms are new, worsening, or concerning even if a device shows a reading that seems reassuring. For a lower-than-usual result without severe symptoms, contact a clinician promptly for advice, particularly if it persists after resting and rechecking.
