Yogurt and lactose intolerance

How the structures involved in Lactose Intolerance differ from normal

Short answer

Yogurt contains lactose, but some people with lactose intolerance tolerate certain yogurts better because bacterial cultures break down part of the lactose.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why reactions can differ

Lactose intolerance occurs when the small intestine does not make enough lactase to digest lactose fully. Undigested lactose reaches the large intestine, where it can draw in fluid and be broken down by gut bacteria. People with lactose intolerance may notice bloating, wind, abdominal discomfort, or diarrhoea after dairy foods. The amount eaten, the type of yogurt, whether it is eaten with a meal, and individual tolerance can all change the experience. A reaction after yogurt can also have another dietary or medical explanation.

Find a workable approach

If yogurt seems to trigger symptoms, keep a brief food-and-symptom record that notes the product, portion, timing, and other foods eaten. Discuss it with a clinician or dietitian before making broad long-term food restrictions. They can help distinguish lactose intolerance from milk allergy and other causes of digestive symptoms, and advise how to maintain calcium, protein, and other nutrients. Lactose-free yogurt or a smaller amount with food may suit some people, but individual response is the guide.

When symptoms need assessment

Arrange medical review for persistent digestive symptoms, unexplained weight change, blood in the stool, fever, repeated vomiting, or pain that is severe or worsening. Seek urgent help for signs of a serious allergic reaction after dairy, such as swelling of the lips or tongue, wheezing, or trouble breathing. These are not typical lactose-intolerance symptoms and need prompt assessment.

Questions to discuss

Ask whether your symptom pattern fits lactose intolerance, whether a structured dietary trial or food intolerance testing is appropriate, and how to meet nutritional needs if you reduce dairy. Mention any family history of bowel disease, recent infection, new medicines, or symptoms that wake you from sleep.
