What should you know about yellow nappy rash?

Cream, urine, stool or dried fluid can make an irritated nappy area look yellow. The skin underneath may still be affected by irritation from moisture and rubbing. A bright red rash in the folds with small nearby spots can suggest yeast, while honey-coloured crust, pus or increasing warmth can indicate infection and needs assessment.

Colour alone cannot identify the cause. Consider whether the rash started after diarrhoea, antibiotics, a new wipe or a change in nappies. Do not rely on appearance alone if the skin is raw, bleeding or painful.

Change nappies promptly, rinse with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free cleanser, and pat rather than rub. Allow the area to air briefly when practical. A simple protective ointment or Emollient Therapy may reduce contact with moisture when used as directed.

Avoid talc, perfumes, antiseptics and household remedies. If a clinician recommends Topical Antifungal Treatment, use it for the advised duration and do not layer additional medicines without checking. Keep the product away from eyes and wash hands before and after care.

Seek urgent advice if the baby has fever, seems unusually unwell, feeds poorly, is difficult to wake, or has rapidly spreading redness, blisters, pus, marked swelling or severe pain. Arrange review when the rash is weeping, crusted, recurrent, involves the folds, or does not improve with gentle care. A severe rash in a very young baby warrants prompt assessment.

Ask whether the yellow material is residue, dried fluid or a sign of infection; whether yeast is likely; which barrier product to use; and what exact changes should prompt urgent care.
