What should you know about yellow metanium nappy rash?

Metanium can leave a visible yellow layer on the skin or nappy. That colour does not by itself show whether the rash is improving or infected. Irritant nappy rash commonly follows prolonged contact with urine or stool and may look red, raw or shiny. A rash involving skin folds, with small surrounding spots or ongoing soreness, may need consideration of a yeast infection.

Gently clean away soiling without rubbing. Note whether the yellow appearance sits on top of the skin or whether the skin underneath is cracked, wet, bleeding or increasingly red. Do not apply several medicated products together unless a clinician has advised this.

Change wet or soiled nappies promptly, rinse with lukewarm water or use a fragrance-free cleanser, and pat dry. Give short periods without a nappy when practical. Apply only the product recommended for your child and follow its directions. Seek urgent advice if your baby is feverish, unusually sleepy, feeding poorly, in significant pain, or has rapidly spreading redness, blisters, pus, bleeding or extensive broken skin. Arrange a prompt review for a rash that reaches the folds, keeps returning, becomes wet or crusted, or fails to improve with gentle care. Very young babies with a new severe rash should be assessed promptly.

Ask whether the yellow colour is residue or a skin change, whether a yeast infection is possible, which barrier product to use, how often to apply it, and when the nappy rash needs examination.
