Yellow fever symptoms

Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness. Many early symptoms overlap with other infections, which is why recent travel locations, transit stops, insect bites, vaccinations, and the date symptoms started are useful details for the treating clinician. Some people feel better after the first illness phase, while others can become much more unwell.

When yellow fever becomes severe, the liver and other organs may be affected. Yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding, or altered alertness are warning features that should not be watched at home.

Arrange medical advice promptly if fever or flu-like illness develops during or after travel in a place where mosquitoes may transmit yellow fever. Avoid mosquito bites while ill by using repellent, covering exposed skin, and staying in screened or air-conditioned spaces where possible. Do not take aspirin or similar anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a clinician says they are appropriate, because bleeding can be a concern in some illnesses.

Seek urgent assessment immediately for jaundice, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, reduced urine, severe weakness, or difficulty breathing. Tell emergency staff about your travel route and potential mosquito exposure.
