What should you know about yellow fever over 60?

Age over 60 is a precaution, not an automatic reason to avoid the vaccine. The decision depends on where you will go, your itinerary, whether vaccination is required for entry, and your medical history.

Yellow fever is a viral illness spread by infected mosquitoes in some parts of Africa and South America. It can start with fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and weakness; severe illness can involve yellowing of the eyes or skin, bleeding, or organ problems.

The vaccine uses a weakened live virus. People over 60, especially those receiving it for the first time, may have a higher chance of serious vaccine reactions than younger adults. A clinician weighs that possibility against the chance of mosquito exposure on your specific trip.

Arrange a travel-health appointment well before departure and bring your full itinerary, including stopovers. Tell the clinician about previous yellow fever vaccines, egg allergy, thymus disease or surgery, immune-system conditions, cancer treatment, organ transplant, HIV, and medicines that suppress immunity.

If vaccination is appropriate, use the documentation provided by the vaccination centre for travel. If it is not appropriate, ask whether a medical waiver is available and confirm entry rules with the destination's official authorities. A waiver may not be accepted everywhere.

Use mosquito-bite prevention throughout travel: apply an appropriate repellent, wear long sleeves and trousers when practical, and choose screened or air-conditioned accommodation where possible.

Seek urgent medical care during or after travel if you develop fever and feel very unwell, particularly after mosquito exposure in an area where yellow fever occurs. Tell the healthcare team where you travelled and when symptoms began.

Get emergency help for yellow skin or eyes, unusual bleeding, confusion, severe weakness, fainting, trouble breathing, or persistent vomiting. These signs need prompt assessment regardless of whether you were vaccinated.

After vaccination, urgent assessment is also needed for a severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, new confusion, marked weakness, or symptoms that rapidly worsen.

Ask whether your destinations and stopovers create a yellow fever exposure risk, whether proof of vaccination is required, and whether your health conditions or medicines change the vaccine decision.
