Symptoms may begin with fever, headache, body aches, nausea, or tiredness. In some cases the illness becomes more severe, with yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding, or extreme weakness. These are features of illness that require urgent assessment, not signs that ordinary contact has exposed another person.

If you are in or have recently left an area where yellow fever occurs, reduce mosquito bites by using repellent, covering exposed skin, and staying in screened or air-conditioned spaces where possible. If you have fever, rest, drink fluids if you can keep them down, and seek medical advice rather than self-treating without discussing your travel history.

Tell a clinician about your travel locations, dates, any transit stops, mosquito bites, and previous yellow fever vaccination. That information can guide testing and care. Before a future trip, arrange travel-health advice early enough to discuss vaccination and other bite-prevention measures.

Get urgent medical help if fever after travel is accompanied by yellowing of the eyes or skin, bleeding, confusion, severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, very dark urine, fainting, or difficulty waking. A fever after travel to a risk area also deserves same-day medical advice even when it seems mild, because several infections can cause similar early symptoms.
