Yeast under breast treatment: practical guidance

The skin beneath the breast can trap sweat and heat, while movement creates rubbing. Yeast may then grow on irritated skin, causing soreness, itch, burning, moisture, scaling or cracks. Intertrigo describes inflammation in a skin fold and may occur with or without yeast. Contact dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis and ringworm can resemble it, so the correct treatment depends on an accurate assessment.

Rinse or wash gently, then pat the fold dry rather than rubbing. Let the skin air-dry when practical, wear a well-fitting breathable bra and change damp clothing promptly. Use a clean, soft layer only if it stays dry and does not increase friction. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an antifungal cream or powder and its application. Avoid fragranced products and steroid-only creams unless specifically recommended.

Arrange care if the rash is not settling with advised treatment, keeps returning or interferes with sleep or movement. Seek prompt help for rapidly spreading redness, increasing warmth, swelling, pus, deep cracks, severe pain, foul smell or fever. Tell the clinician about diabetes, immune conditions, pregnancy and medicines that may affect skin healing.

Ask whether this is yeast, uncomplicated intertrigo or another skin condition; whether a sample is needed; and which product, schedule and duration are appropriate. Ask how to prevent moisture collecting in the fold and what signs mean the treatment should be stopped or reviewed.
