Yeast rash under the breast: what to know

Yeast can multiply where skin touches skin and warmth, sweat and friction remain trapped. The fold may look bright red or darker than the surrounding skin, feel tender or burning, and become moist or cracked. Small spots just beyond the main patch can occur, but appearance alone cannot confirm yeast. Irritation from products, heat rash, intertrigo, eczema, psoriasis or ringworm can look similar. A clinician may inspect the area and, if needed, test a skin sample.

Gently wash the fold, pat it completely dry and change out of sweaty clothing promptly. Choose a clean, breathable bra and avoid tight fabric rubbing the area. Do not share towels, and wash clothing and towels regularly. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend an antifungal cream or powder suited to the site; follow the label and finish the advised course. Avoid steroid cream by itself unless a clinician has told you to use it, because it can mask or worsen an infection.

Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, very painful, cracked, oozing, foul-smelling or associated with fever. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling or pus. An examination is also sensible when the rash keeps returning, does not improve with appropriate pharmacy care, or you have diabetes, a weakened immune system or another condition that affects healing.

Ask whether the appearance fits yeast or another cause, whether a test is needed, which product and duration are appropriate, and how to reduce moisture and friction in the fold. Mention new soaps, creams, medicines, sweating, recurrence and any breast skin changes outside the fold.
