Yeast rash symptoms: what to look for

Symptoms often become more noticeable in warm, covered or rubbing areas. The skin may look bright red, feel sore during movement or develop shallow cracks. Moisture can soften the surface and scratching can add damage. These features are not unique to yeast: heat rash, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, ringworm, a medicine rash and contact dermatitis may also cause itch or redness.

Keep the area clean and dry, use loose breathable clothing and pause products that may irritate it. Pat rather than scrub after washing. Avoid sharing towels and wash clothing that becomes sweaty. If a pharmacist or clinician recommends an antifungal, follow the label or prescription directions and mention other medicines, pregnancy or allergies before starting it.

Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, spreading, recurrent, cracked, wet or unchanged after appropriate care. Prompt help is warranted for fever, pus, rapidly worsening pain or expanding warmth. Emergency care is appropriate for breathing difficulty, faintness, facial swelling or a sudden widespread rash after a new medicine.
