Yeast Rash in Adults: What to Know

Yeast can overgrow where sweat, friction, and limited airflow keep skin damp. Common sites include the groin, armpits, under the breasts, and between overlapping areas of skin. The rash may look bright red or darker than nearby skin, feel sore or burning, and have a moist surface. Small spots just beyond the main rash can occur. Other conditions can look similar, including intertrigo, contact dermatitis, ringworm, psoriasis, or scabies; appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Gently wash the area and pat it fully dry; avoid scrubbing. Choose loose, breathable clothing and change damp garments promptly. Reduce rubbing and avoid fragranced products on irritated skin. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an over-the-counter antifungal is suitable and how to use it. Do not use a steroid cream by itself on a suspected fungal rash, because it can mask or worsen the infection. Keep towels and clothing clean, and do not share them.

Arrange medical care if the rash is rapidly spreading, very painful, cracked, draining, or accompanied by fever. Seek prompt assessment if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or repeated episodes. A clinician can examine the skin and check for another diagnosis when treatment does not help or the rash keeps returning.
