What should you know about yeast neck rash?

Sweat, skin folds, collars, scarves and friction can leave the neck warm and damp. Yeast overgrowth may then cause an irritated patch with burning or itch, sometimes with small spots near its edge. Infants, people with deeper skin folds and anyone who sweats heavily may notice this pattern, but neck location does not prove the cause. Contact dermatitis from fragrance, hair products or fabric, as well as heat rash, intertrigo, ringworm, psoriasis, scabies or atopic dermatitis, can produce similar changes.

Rinse away sweat and product residue with a gentle cleanser, then pat the neck dry. Keep collars loose, change damp clothing and avoid perfumes, oils or new hair products on the area until it settles. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antifungal is appropriate; use it exactly as directed and avoid applying steroid cream alone unless advised. If the rash reaches the face, eyes or scalp, ask for site-specific guidance before using a treatment.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, widespread blistering or skin peeling. Arrange prompt care for fever, pus, rapidly spreading redness, significant pain or a rash near the eyes. Make an appointment if the rash persists, recurs, or fails to improve after suitable treatment, since a clinician may need to distinguish yeast from allergy or another infection.
