A yeast rash may be vivid red, involve the creases, and have smaller spots around its edges. Irritant nappy dermatitis often affects areas exposed to urine or stool and may spare the folds. These patterns can overlap, so a rash that fails to improve with basic protection may need examination. Treatment should match the cause; using several creams at once can make the skin harder to assess and may cause extra irritation.

Change nappies as soon as possible, cleanse gently, and pat the area dry. Apply a thin protective layer of an emollient or barrier product as advised, and allow brief nappy-free time when feasible. For suspected yeast, a clinician may recommend a topical antifungal; follow the exact directions and complete the advised course. Avoid steroid combinations, fragranced products, talc, and leftover medicines unless a healthcare professional has prescribed them for this episode.
