What should you know about yeast diaper rash blisters?

Yeast-related nappy irritation often causes a bright red rash in moist skin folds, with small spots or bumps beyond the main rash. True fluid-filled blisters, open areas, pus, heavy crusting, or marked tenderness are less typical and may indicate friction, allergic irritation, bacterial infection, or another skin problem. Do not pop the blisters. The appearance, location, and whether the child is otherwise well help a clinician decide what is happening.

Change the nappy promptly after wetting or soiling, rinse with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free cleanser, and pat rather than rub. Give the skin short periods of air exposure when practical. Use a clean, absorbent nappy and avoid talc, fragranced wipes, antiseptics, and home remedies on broken skin. A clinician may recommend an antifungal treatment for confirmed yeast and an emollient barrier to reduce moisture and friction; use products only as directed for the child’s age.

Contact a clinician promptly when blisters are present, especially in a young baby. Seek urgent help if the child has fever, seems unusually sleepy or unwell, is feeding poorly, has rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, skin peeling, or sores near the eyes or mouth. Medical review is also needed when the rash does not begin to settle after the advised treatment or keeps returning.
