Yeast bum rash: causes, care, and red flags

Sweat, rubbing, close-fitting clothes, and prolonged dampness can irritate the skin around the buttocks and allow yeast to overgrow, especially in a crease. The area may feel itchy, raw, or burning and may show a red, moist, scaly, or cracked patch. Irritant dermatitis from stool, urine, wipes, or vigorous cleaning can look similar. Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, heat rash, and intertrigo are other possibilities. A clinician may need to inspect the crease and surrounding skin rather than relying on the word yeast.

Clean the area gently after sweating or bowel movements, then pat dry. Change damp underwear promptly and choose breathable fabric that limits rubbing. Avoid fragranced wipes, deodorising products, harsh soap, and scratching. If the skin is broken, keep products simple and ask a pharmacist or clinician before using a medicated cream. A photo, symptom timeline, and list of recent antibiotics or products can make the appointment more useful.

Seek prompt care for severe pain, pus, fever, spreading warmth or redness, bleeding, or sores that do not begin to heal. Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or extensive blistering. Arrange a review if the rash reaches the genitals, returns repeatedly, or fails to improve with careful hygiene and dryness. Diabetes or reduced immunity is a reason to seek advice earlier.
