Xanthelasma laser removal

Xanthelasma is a yellowish plaque formed within eyelid skin, often near the inner eye. CO2 laser resurfacing works by removing or vaporising targeted surface tissue so the skin can heal. It is not suitable for every plaque: a deeper, thick, broad, or awkwardly positioned deposit may need another approach. Diagnosis comes first because several eyelid conditions can resemble one another.

Have the area examined by a dermatologist experienced with eyelid procedures. Discuss whether laser treatment can reach the deposit without placing the eye at risk, and ask about protective shields, anaesthesia, dressings, cleansing, and sun avoidance. Healing skin may be red, tender, crusted, or temporarily darker or lighter, especially in some skin types. Follow the prescribed wound-care plan and do not peel crusts. If laser is unsuitable, surgical excision may be considered instead. Managing cholesterol-related health factors is worthwhile for overall health and may be part of the assessment, although it does not remove the plaque already present.

Before treatment, obtain an assessment for any new, asymmetric, rapidly changing, bleeding, or ulcerated eyelid lesion. After treatment, contact the clinic promptly for worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, marked swelling, eye pain, light sensitivity, or any change in vision.

Ask how deep the plaque appears, what result laser can realistically provide, whether more than one treatment area may be needed, how pigment changes are reduced, and what alternative would be used if the deposit returns.
