What should you know about WSI digital pathology?

WSI means whole-slide imaging. After tissue from a Biopsy is prepared and stained on a glass slide, a scanner captures the slide across its surface and creates a digital file. A pathologist can navigate from a broad view to selected areas, adjust magnification and compare marked regions. The image represents the prepared specimen; it does not replace the clinical history or the original tissue.

Digital images can support collaboration, teaching, archiving and review by another specialist. Image quality depends on tissue preparation, staining, scanning and the software used. Some findings still need additional stains, molecular tests or examination of the physical specimen.

Ask whether your diagnosis was based on a digital image, a glass slide, or both. Request an explanation of unfamiliar terms such as tumour type, grade, margins or biomarker results. If the diagnosis is complex or treatment decisions depend on a small tissue sample, you can ask whether a Second Opinion is appropriate and whether the necessary slides or digital files can be shared securely.

WSI itself does not cause symptoms and is not a treatment. Contact your care team promptly if you develop new symptoms after the biopsy or procedure that supplied the tissue, such as increasing pain, redness, swelling, fever or bleeding. Seek urgent help for severe bleeding, breathing difficulty, fainting or sudden severe illness.

Ask what the image showed, how confident the team is in the interpretation, whether extra stains or molecular tests are needed, and how the result affects your next decision. You may also ask who reviewed the image, how it is stored, and whether a specialist can review the case.
