What should you know about writing skin rash?

Dermatographism tends to follow friction or scratching and may rise quickly before fading. A rash that stays in place, spreads, scales, cracks, oozes or forms a ring points to a different group of skin problems. Possible causes include Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Psoriasis, Ringworm or Scabies.

A new medicine can also cause Drug Rash. The appearance, body location, timing, itch, pain and exposure history help a clinician narrow the possibilities. A photograph can preserve useful information when a temporary mark fades.

Avoid scratching, fragranced products and unnecessary rubbing. Wash gently, pat dry, moisturise dry skin and keep cool if heat worsens the rash. Do not apply steroid, antifungal or antibiotic creams without appropriate advice, because the wrong product can mask the pattern or irritate the skin.

Record new medicines, foods, cosmetics, detergents, travel, animal contact and anyone else with similar itching. A clinician can select treatment after examining the rash and its distribution.

Seek urgent help for a rash with breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, severe pain, eye involvement or a high fever. Arrange prompt medical review when a rash follows a new medicine, spreads quickly, becomes infected-looking, or affects a baby, older adult or person with reduced immunity.

Ask what features distinguish a pressure reaction from infection, eczema or allergy; whether testing is needed; which products to stop; and what changes should bring you back for review.
