TFCC Wrist Sprain: What Should You Know?

Short answer
A TFCC wrist sprain affects stabilising cartilage and ligaments on the little-finger side, often causing pain with gripping or forearm rotation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical location
- Little-finger side of the wrist
- Common triggers
- Gripping, pushing, and forearm rotation
What the TFCC does
The triangular fibrocartilage complex helps support the wrist near the ulna, the forearm bone on the little-finger side. A fall, forceful twisting, repeated rotation, or a load through the hand can irritate or tear this structure. Pain may be felt on the little-finger side and can flare when turning a key, opening a jar, pushing up from a chair, or gripping. Clicking, reduced strength, or a feeling of instability can also occur. Other wrist problems can feel similar, so an examination determines whether the TFCC is the likely source.
Protecting the wrist
Pause painful lifting, pushing, and twisting. Keep frequently used objects close to the body and use both hands for heavier tasks. A clinician may suggest [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) to limit aggravating motion. Once the injury is assessed, [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) can address mobility, grip control, and gradual loading. [Kinesiology Taping](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/kinesiology-taping/) may be considered as part of a broader plan, but tape should not be used to push through worsening pain.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment if the wrist is deformed, the hand becomes numb or unusually cold, fingers change colour, or pain follows a major impact and you cannot use the hand. Arrange evaluation for persistent little-finger-side pain, repeated clicking, weakness, or a wrist that feels unstable. Prompt review is especially useful when symptoms began after a fall or twisting injury.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the TFCC or another structure best explains the symptoms, whether imaging is appropriate, and how long to limit rotation. Ask when to start exercises, how to build grip strength, and which work or sport movements should wait.

Questions people ask
Can a TFCC sprain cause clicking?
Yes. Clicking or catching can occur, particularly when the wrist is loaded or the forearm rotates.
Is rest alone enough for TFCC symptoms?
Some injuries improve with protection and gradual rehabilitation, but persistent pain or instability needs clinical assessment.
