Wrist Sprain vs Break: What Should You Know?

Short answer
A wrist sprain injures a ligament, while a wrist break is a fracture, and both can cause pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Injury involved
- Ligament in a sprain; bone in a fracture
- Useful test
- An examination, with X-ray when indicated
How they differ
A sprain may follow a twist, fall, or sudden load that stretches or tears a ligament. A fracture is a crack or break in one of the wrist bones, often after a fall onto an outstretched hand. Tenderness over a bone, visible change in shape, or pain that makes gripping very difficult can raise concern for a fracture, but symptoms overlap too much to diagnose at home. An examination and, when appropriate, an X-ray help separate these injuries. You can read more about [Wrist Pain](/symptoms/wrist-pain/) while arranging an assessment.
What to do now
Stop activities that increase pain and support the wrist in a comfortable neutral position. A wrapped cold pack may help swelling; keep a cloth between the pack and skin. Remove rings if swelling is developing. Do not force movement, massage a newly injured wrist, or try to straighten a wrist that looks deformed. A clinician may recommend [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) after examining you. Rehabilitation may be useful once a serious injury has been excluded and movement can safely begin; [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) can guide that process.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care for a wrist that is visibly crooked, an open wound near the injury, severe or worsening swelling, numbness, pale or blue fingers, or fingers that feel unusually cold. Arrange prompt assessment after a fall or direct blow when pain is strong, bone tenderness persists, or you cannot use the hand normally. Delaying an evaluation can allow a fracture or significant ligament injury to remain unsupported.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which structure seems injured, whether imaging is needed, how long support should be worn, and which movements are safe. Also ask what changes should bring you back sooner and when gripping, lifting, work, or sport can be resumed.

Questions people ask
Can a sprain and fracture feel similar?
Yes. Pain, swelling, bruising, and restricted movement can occur with either injury, so an examination may be needed.
Should I move a painful wrist?
Avoid painful or forceful movement until the wrist has been assessed, especially after a fall or impact.
