Where a Wrist Sprain Can Hurt

Pain on the thumb side can follow a fall onto the hand, while pain on the little-finger side may appear with twisting or loading. Central or back-of-wrist discomfort can accompany bending or gripping. Location helps a clinician decide what to examine, but it cannot identify the injured structure by itself. Tenderness directly over a bone deserves particular attention because a fracture can resemble a sprain.

Reduce gripping, pushing, and twisting that reproduces symptoms. Keep the wrist in a comfortable position and consider a splint if movement is difficult. Gentle finger movement helps prevent unnecessary stiffness. Once pain settles, physiotherapy may introduce wrist motion and strengthening matched to the affected side and activity.

Get urgent help for a deformed wrist, severe or rapidly increasing pain, numbness, or fingers that become cold or discoloured. Arrange assessment after a fall or when pain is sharply localised over bone. Persistent pain in one area despite protection should also be checked rather than repeatedly tested.
