Pain along the thumb side of the wrist, especially with lifting a child, opening a jar, or moving the thumb, can occur with [De Quervain's Tenosynovitis](/conditions/de-quervain-tenosynovitis/). Tingling, burning, or altered feeling in the thumb and nearby fingers may point toward [Carpal Tunnel Syndrome](/conditions/carpal-tunnel-syndrome/). Aching at the thumb base can involve [Hand Osteoarthritis](/conditions/hand-osteoarthritis/). A fall, bruising, or immediate swelling needs assessment for injury; a symptom does not by itself identify its cause.

Reduce gripping, pinching, and repeated thumb movements for a short period while keeping other comfortable finger movements gentle. Support the wrist in a neutral position if that eases symptoms, and avoid a brace that causes numbness or pressure. Note whether pain is on the thumb side, travels into the hand, or comes with tingling. Get urgent assessment after trauma when the wrist or thumb looks deformed, swelling is rapid, or movement is severely limited. Seek prompt care for new persistent numbness, loss of thumb strength, a cold or discoloured hand, or escalating pain. Arrange a routine appointment when symptoms recur, disturb sleep, or do not improve after reducing the provoking activity.
