Wrist Break vs Sprain: What Should You Know?

How the structures involved in Ligament Sprain differ from normal

Short answer

A wrist break involves a fractured bone, while a sprain injures a wrist ligament; symptoms can overlap, so an examination and often an X-ray are needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Injury types
Fracture affects bone; sprain affects ligament.
First priority
Protect the wrist and arrange assessment.

How a break differs from a sprain

A fracture may follow a fall onto an outstretched hand or a direct blow. A sprain stretches or tears one or more ligaments, the strong bands that connect bones and help steady the joint. Both injuries may produce tenderness, bruising, swelling, and difficulty gripping. A visible change in shape, marked swelling, or pain directly over a bone raises concern for fracture, but appearance alone cannot confirm it.

A clinician checks circulation, sensation, movement, and the precise area of tenderness. Plain X-rays commonly show many fractures, although a ligament injury may have a normal X-ray. Further assessment can be needed when pain persists despite an initial normal image.

What to do now

Keep the wrist still in a comfortable position and remove rings before swelling increases. Use a wrapped cold pack for short periods, keep the hand raised, and avoid lifting or testing the wrist. Do not try to straighten a visibly deformed wrist. A temporary splint can limit movement while you arrange medical assessment; see [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) for general information.

Pain relief should match your age, health conditions, allergies, and other medicines. A clinician may recommend immobilisation for a fracture or a structured rehabilitation plan for a sprain. Physiotherapy can help restore movement and strength after the acute injury; learn about [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/).

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for a wrist that looks out of place, an open wound near the injury, fingers that become pale, blue, cold, numb, or increasingly difficult to move, or severe pain that is worsening. Arrange prompt assessment after a significant fall or blow, especially when swelling or bone tenderness makes normal use difficult. Early evaluation helps protect alignment and hand function.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which structure seems injured? Do I need an X-ray or another scan? How long should the wrist remain supported? Which movements are safe? When should I begin exercises, and what changes should prompt a review?

Questions people ask

Can a sprain look like a wrist break?

Yes. Swelling, bruising, and pain can occur with either injury, so examination and imaging may be needed.

Should I move a painful wrist to test it?

No. Keep it supported and avoid forceful movement until a clinician has assessed it.
