Working Out With Shin Splints: What You Should Know

Short answer
Working out with shin splints may be possible with low-impact activity, but avoid running or jumping that increases pain during or after exercise.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding shin splints
Shin splints, also called medial tibial stress syndrome, describe pain along the inner edge of the shin linked with repeated loading. It can follow a sudden increase in running, jumping, hills, or harder surfaces. The discomfort may spread along the shin rather than staying in one tiny spot. Shin pain with a very precise tender area, pain at rest, or pain that continues to worsen deserves assessment because a stress injury can need a different plan. Flat feet and changes in foot or leg mechanics may also influence loading.
Modify activity while you recover
Pause the activity that provokes symptoms and use options such as swimming, cycling, or gentle strength work if they remain comfortable. Return to impact gradually only after everyday walking and low-impact exercise are comfortable. Increase one training demand at a time, wear supportive footwear, and avoid sudden hill or surface changes. A physiotherapist can review strength and movement; gait retraining may help if running mechanics contribute. Custom orthotics are not needed by everyone, so their use should follow an individual assessment.
When to have shin pain checked
Seek assessment if pain is pinpointed, present at rest or at night, associated with swelling, or causing a limp. Prompt care is also appropriate after a direct injury, or when numbness, weakness, or unusual colour develops in the foot. A clinician can examine the shin and decide whether you need imaging or a protected return to activity.
Useful questions
Ask what type of exercise is appropriate now, which running sign means you should stop, and how to build impact back safely. Discuss footwear, flat feet, muscle strength, and whether physiotherapy or gait retraining fits your needs.

Questions people ask
Can I run through shin splints?
Running that increases pain should be paused; choose comfortable low-impact movement while the area settles.
Do shin splints always need orthotics?
No. Foot supports are considered after examining your foot shape, symptoms, and movement pattern.
