The image may show earwax, skin irritation, discharge, swelling, a foreign object, or features of the eardrum. A view can be partly blocked by wax or limited by discomfort and movement, especially in young children.

An image is only one part of an ear assessment. Your clinician may also ask about pain, fever, hearing changes, recent swimming, cold symptoms, injuries, and medicines. They may examine the outside of the ear or recommend a different assessment when the picture does not explain the symptoms.

Tell the clinician about ear surgery, a known eardrum perforation, hearing devices, discharge, or sharp pain before the examination. Try to keep still while the tip is positioned at the ear entrance. A child may feel more comfortable sitting on a parent's lap with gentle support.

Do not put cotton buds, hairpins, or other objects into the ear canal to prepare for the visit. These can push wax deeper or injure delicate skin. Use drops or other ear treatments only as advised, particularly if there is discharge or a suspected eardrum problem.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain with swelling around or behind the ear, dizziness with weakness or difficulty walking, a serious head injury, or facial weakness. These symptoms need assessment rather than repeated home inspection.

Arrange a clinical review for ear pain that persists, fluid or blood from the ear, hearing changes, a blocked-ear feeling that does not settle, or fever with ear symptoms. For babies and children who are unusually sleepy, very distressed, feeding poorly, or difficult to rouse, seek prompt medical advice.

Ask what the image shows, whether wax is affecting the view, and whether you need treatment, hearing assessment, or follow-up. If the examination is for a child, ask how to make any future ear checks more comfortable and which changes should prompt an earlier review.
