A phone screen can make it easier to see the image and, where appropriate, share it with a clinician. Earwax, skin, discharge or the angle of the camera can block the view, so a clear-looking image does not rule out an ear problem. Clinicians also use the history, symptoms and a careful examination to decide whether there is inflammation, infection, a foreign object or another cause. A device should be regarded as an observation tool rather than a way to make a diagnosis at home.

Read the device instructions before use and fit any soft tip designed for the ear. Keep the camera near the entrance of the canal; do not push it in, especially if the person moves suddenly. Stop if it causes pain, bleeding or dizziness. Never use an otoscope to scrape wax, remove an object or place drops deeper into the ear. Clean reusable parts as directed and avoid sharing them without cleaning.

Arrange medical advice for persistent ear pain, reduced hearing, discharge, a blocked sensation that does not settle, or a child who is unusually distressed or pulling at an ear. Seek urgent care for swelling or redness behind the ear, severe pain with fever, facial weakness, a significant injury, or sudden hearing loss. An object or button battery in the ear requires urgent assessment and should not be probed at home.

Ask whether the image is clear enough to be useful, whether wax may be obscuring the view, and what symptoms should prompt an in-person examination. For a child, ask how to position them safely and whether a child health appointment is more appropriate.
