What should you know about widespread lichen planus?

Lichen planus may appear as flat-topped, shiny bumps with fine lines on their surface. It can affect the wrists, ankles, lower back, legs, or other sites, and scratching may create new areas or leave darker marks after the inflammation settles. The mouth, scalp, nails, and genital skin can also be involved, sometimes without the same appearance as the skin rash.

A widespread eruption can be very itchy, but itch intensity varies. A dermatologist may review medicines, examine the mouth and nails, and take a biopsy when the pattern needs confirmation. Do not assume every new bump is part of the same flare.

Keep nails short, use fragrance-free moisturiser, and avoid hot water, harsh scrubbing, and scratching. Loose clothing can reduce rubbing on active areas. Prescribed topical corticosteroids may calm selected skin sites; oral corticosteroid treatment or another medicine may be considered when disease is extensive or affects sensitive areas. Use treatment only as directed because strength and duration matter, especially on thin skin.

Arrange review for a rapidly spreading rash, severe itch that disrupts sleep, painful mouth sores, scalp hair loss, nail changes, or genital involvement. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, trouble swallowing, widespread blistering, fever, or skin that looks infected with increasing warmth, pus, and pain.
