What should you know about widespread granuloma annulare?

The bumps often join into smooth or slightly raised rings rather than forming a scaly surface. They may occur on the hands, feet, arms, legs, or trunk and can be skin-coloured, pink, or brown. Widespread disease involves multiple separated areas. It can resemble fungal rash, eczema, or other ring-shaped eruptions, so a dermatologist may examine the borders closely and sometimes take a skin sample when the appearance is uncertain.

The condition is not diagnosed from the ring shape alone. Tell the clinician whether the patches itch, hurt, change colour, or leave marks, and mention any new medicines or other health changes.

Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, avoid scratching or harsh friction, and protect exposed areas from strong sunlight if they darken after inflammation. Some people need no active treatment when the rash causes little trouble. For widespread or persistent disease, a dermatologist may discuss topical corticosteroids, steroid injection into selected lesions, light-based treatment, or another plan based on the pattern and skin sensitivity.

Book a dermatology assessment for a new widespread ring-shaped eruption, rapid expansion, significant itch or pain, or a rash that does not behave like a simple irritation. Seek prompt care if the skin becomes blistered, ulcerated, infected-looking, or associated with fever or facial swelling. A changing diagnosis may require a different treatment.

Ask how confident the diagnosis is, whether a biopsy is needed, which areas should be treated first, how long to try a prescribed corticosteroid, and what changes should trigger an earlier review.
