Why is titanium implant used in shoulder replacement?

Shoulder implants must support movement while fitting within a joint that depends on coordinated muscles, tendons, and bone. Titanium can be useful in a component that needs structural strength without adding much weight. Some implant surfaces are designed to encourage fixation to bone, depending on the system. Shoulder replacements may use more than one material, and the final choice reflects bone quality, joint damage, stability, tendon condition, and the planned replacement design.

Ask your surgeon which parts contain titanium and how they will be fixed. Report metal sensitivity or any earlier implant reaction. During recovery, use the sling and movement limits as prescribed, attend physiotherapy, and increase activity gradually. Do not test strength by lifting before the shoulder has been cleared for that stage.

Seek advice for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, new numbness or weakness, or sudden loss of shoulder function. After a fall, urgent assessment is appropriate if the shoulder changes shape or the arm becomes difficult to move.
