Why is suture anchor used in shoulder stabilisation surgery?

The shoulder socket is relatively shallow, so stability depends on the labrum, capsule, ligaments, and surrounding muscles working together. After repeated dislocation or another injury, the labrum or capsule may need to be reattached or tightened. An anchor placed in the socket rim gives sutures a firm fixation point. Those sutures bring the selected soft tissue back to the rim or hold it in a tighter position.

This is a way to support the repair, not a guarantee that the shoulder can immediately tolerate force. The number and location of anchors depend on the injury and operation, including procedures such as a Bankart repair.

Use the sling and observe the prescribed limits on reaching, rotation, lifting, and weight bearing. Keep the elbow, wrist, and hand moving if permitted, while avoiding unapproved shoulder exercises. Physiotherapy usually restores controlled motion before demanding strength or overhead activity. Do not return to contact sport or heavy work until your surgeon and physiotherapist agree that movement and control are ready.

Report fever, increasing wound redness or drainage, worsening swelling, uncontrolled pain, or new persistent numbness. Seek urgent assessment after a fall or sudden movement if the shoulder looks abnormal, feels as though it has dislocated, or suddenly loses function. Breathing difficulty or chest pain requires emergency help.
