Retinol is a vitamin A derivative applied to the skin. It is converted within skin cells into active retinoid forms that can change how cells mature and shed. This may help reduce pore blockage and improve the appearance of uneven texture over time. Retinoid activity can also support changes in fine lines and uneven pigmentation, although the response depends on formulation, consistency, skin sensitivity, and the concern being treated.

Early use may cause dryness, tightness, redness, stinging, or peeling. These reactions do not prove that a product is working and can become more troublesome when several irritating products are combined. A programme usually adjusts frequency and product strength to balance benefit with tolerance.

Use the amount and schedule provided by your clinician, usually on clean, dry skin and often in the evening. Introduce it gradually if advised, moisturise to support the skin barrier, and use broad-spectrum sun protection during the day. Keep retinol away from the eyes, corners of the nose, and broken skin unless instructed otherwise. Mention pregnancy, trying to conceive, eczema, rosacea, or a history of strong reactions before starting.

Pause the product and contact the clinician if burning, swelling, severe redness, cracking, or a spreading rash develops. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty. Persistent irritation may mean the schedule, formulation, or diagnosis needs reassessment rather than more product.
