Why is a pulse oximeter used in a GP consultation?

The small sensor is usually placed on a fingertip and uses light to estimate how much oxygen is being carried in the blood. It also displays a pulse reading. A GP may use it when assessing breathlessness, cough, chest symptoms, fever, a respiratory illness, or a condition that can affect breathing or circulation. The result is a snapshot rather than a complete picture. Cold hands, movement, nail products, poor circulation, and the sensor's fit can affect a reading, so the GP may repeat it or interpret it with other observations.

Rest your hand and keep the finger still while the device settles. Tell the GP if your hands are cold, you use nail polish or artificial nails, or the clip feels uncomfortable. Describe your symptoms clearly, including whether they happen at rest, on walking, when lying down, or at a particular time of day. Bring details of inhalers, oxygen equipment, or heart and lung conditions if these apply. Do not change prescribed medicines based only on a home device reading.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips or face, chest pain, confusion, fainting, inability to speak comfortably because of breathlessness, or marked sleepiness. A pulse oximeter reading may be useful information to share, but symptoms and appearance can be urgent even when a device reading is uncertain. If you have been given an individual action plan, follow its escalation instructions.
