Why is an MRI scanner used in breast MRI?

The scanner creates a strong magnetic field and sends radio waves through the body. Computer processing turns the returning signals into images from different directions. Breast MRI can show tissue detail and patterns of contrast enhancement that may add information to mammography or ultrasound. A contrast medicine is often injected into a vein when the scan is intended to assess blood supply and tissue behaviour. MRI does not use ionising radiation, but the scanner is a narrow, noisy space and movement can blur the pictures. You usually lie face down on a dedicated breast coil while images are taken.

Tell the imaging team if you could be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have kidney disease, have had a reaction to contrast, or have metal or electronic implants. Remove jewellery and other metal items. During the scan, keep still and use the call button if you feel distressed. Ask whether you should avoid food or drink and when results will be discussed; preparation varies with the reason for the examination.

Tell staff immediately if you develop breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread itching, dizziness or severe discomfort after contrast. These reactions need prompt assessment. After leaving, seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat. Contact the imaging service about persistent symptoms or concerns at the injection site.
