Why is linear accelerator used in stereotactic body radiotherapy?

Stereotactic body radiotherapy uses detailed imaging and a treatment plan to locate a defined target in the body. A linear accelerator generates the radiation and moves around the treatment position, sending beams along planned paths. Where the beams meet, the target receives the intended dose; each path is planned with attention to organs and tissues nearby.

Because the target must stay aligned with the plan, the team uses immobilisation, image guidance, and checks before delivery. The technique is suitable only when the target, movement, and surrounding anatomy can be assessed safely. Breathing motion may require special planning or monitoring for targets in the chest or upper abdomen.

Attend planning scans and tell the team if you have pain, anxiety when lying still, an implanted device, or possible pregnancy. Follow instructions about food, drink, medicines, and clothing. At each visit, expect positioning and imaging checks before radiation starts. During delivery, stay as still as you can and use the communication system if you feel unwell; the team can pause to assess you.

Report new or worsening symptoms after treatment, especially breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, marked weakness, or neurological changes. Get urgent help for severe breathing trouble, fainting, confusion, or sudden weakness.
