Why is isokinetic dynamometer used in isokinetic strength testing?

The device secures the body and connects the tested limb to a lever arm. You push or pull as hard as instructed while the machine limits the limb to a preset speed. It can record force across the movement, showing where strength rises or falls and how one muscle action compares with the opposite action or a later test.

The result is not a diagnosis by itself. Pain, effort, joint position, warm-up, instructions, and prior training can affect performance, so a physiotherapist interprets the readings alongside examination findings and your goals.

Wear clothing that allows the joint to move and tell the clinician about pain, surgery, swelling, or restrictions. Follow the warm-up and practice instructions, then give consistent effort without holding your breath or changing position. Ask whether medication, fatigue, or a recent workout could affect the session. Keep the report for comparison when testing is repeated.

Tell the clinician immediately if the test causes sharp pain, giving-way, unusual numbness, dizziness, or a feeling that the joint is unsafe. Stop and seek medical advice for persistent swelling, marked weakness, or pain that does not settle as expected after testing. Emergency symptoms such as chest pain or severe breathlessness need urgent help.

Ask which muscles and movements will be tested, how the device speed is selected, what the readings mean for rehabilitation, and when repeat testing would provide a useful comparison.
