Why is hamstring autograft used in ACL reconstruction?

The surgeon takes tendon tissue from the hamstring area, prepares it, and fixes it inside bone tunnels in the knee to substitute for the injured anterior cruciate ligament. Over time, the graft becomes part of the knee's healing and remodeling process. Using your own tissue provides a biological match, while the hamstring harvest site is separate from the front of the kneecap.

No graft suits every person. Previous surgery, other ligament injuries, sport demands, growth status, tendon quality, and the surgeon's examination can change the recommendation. A hamstring graft can also cause temporary soreness or weakness at the harvest area, so rehabilitation addresses both the reconstructed knee and the hamstring muscles.

After surgery, protect the knee as instructed, practise the prescribed range-of-motion and muscle-control exercises, and progress loading gradually.
