Why is flow cytometry used in a bone marrow biopsy?

A bone marrow sample contains developing blood cells at different stages. Flow cytometry passes prepared cells through a laser-based instrument after laboratory markers have attached to features on their surface or inside them. The pattern of signals helps the laboratory distinguish groups of cells and recognise an unusual population.

This information can support the diagnosis and classification of conditions such as leukaemia or lymphoma, and it may help separate related disorders that look similar under a microscope. It is one part of the assessment; morphology, chromosome or gene testing, blood results, and the clinical picture may also be needed. A report can take time when several tests are being combined.

Ask whether you should continue your usual medicines and tell the team about bleeding problems, blood-thinning medicines, allergies, and previous difficulty with local anaesthetic. During the biopsy, a clinician removes a small core and may draw out liquid marrow, commonly from a pelvic bone. Arrange practical support if soreness or anxiety may make travel difficult, and follow the dressing and activity advice you receive.

Call the biopsy team if bleeding continues through the dressing, pain is worsening rather than settling, or the site becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen, or draining. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, fever with marked weakness, fainting, or trouble breathing. These symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for the laboratory report.

Ask which diagnoses the test is helping to distinguish, whether the sample will undergo chromosome or molecular analysis, and when the combined report is expected. It is also reasonable to ask how the result could affect the next step and who will explain findings that are unclear.
