Why is an ear microsuction device used in ear wax removal?

The clinician examines the ear canal with magnification or a light, then positions a fine suction tube close to the wax. The device draws loose or softened wax into the tube while the clinician can see the working area. You may hear a loud suction sound and notice a brief change in pressure or tickling sensation. Microsuction is not suitable for every ear or every type of blockage; the clinician checks the ear and your history before deciding whether it is appropriate.

Tell the clinician about ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, ear discharge, recurring infections, dizziness, hearing aids or anticoagulant medicine. Follow any instruction to use wax-softening drops beforehand, but do not put cotton buds, hairpins or other objects into the ear canal. After removal, keep the ear dry only if you have been advised to do so, and use any prescribed drops exactly as directed.

Seek prompt clinical assessment for severe ear pain, bleeding, pus-like discharge, fever, marked dizziness, sudden hearing loss or swelling around the ear. These symptoms can have causes other than wax and should not be treated with home instruments. Contact the clinic if pain, persistent blocked hearing or discharge develops after a procedure.

Ask whether the wax is blocking the ear canal, whether softening drops are suitable for you, and which method fits your ear history. If hearing remains altered after wax has been cleared, ask whether a separate hearing assessment is needed.
