Why is a dermatoscope used in dermoscopy?

The handheld device combines magnification with controlled lighting. Some models reduce surface reflection, which can make pigment networks, small blood vessels, scales, and other structures easier to assess. The clinician can compare the appearance of a spot with nearby skin and record images for later comparison when appropriate.

Dermoscopy does not remove tissue and does not by itself provide a final diagnosis. It is an examination aid that helps the clinician decide whether a lesion can be observed, needs follow-up, or should be sampled or treated.

The clinician usually examines the mark with the dermatoscope after looking at it normally. The device may touch the skin, or may be held just above it, depending on the model and the area being checked. Tell the clinician about a new or changing mark, previous skin conditions, and any earlier images of the same area.

Avoid covering the area with makeup immediately before an appointment if possible, and point out spots that itch, bleed, crust, or have changed in colour, shape, or size.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a spot that is changing, repeatedly bleeding, persistently crusted, becoming painful, or unlike your other marks. Seek prompt advice for a rapidly changing lesion or a wound that does not heal. These features do not identify the cause on their own, but they are reasons for examination.

Ask which feature of the mark was assessed, whether a comparison image is useful, when the area should be checked again, and what change should prompt an earlier visit.
