Why is CT scanner used in low-dose CT lung screening?

The scanner uses X-rays and computer processing to make cross-sectional images of the chest. This lets the radiology team examine the lungs in more detail than a plain chest X-ray and identify nodules or other areas that may need assessment. The low-dose setting reduces radiation exposure for people being screened, who may otherwise have no symptoms. A finding is not automatically cancer: it may reflect infection, inflammation, scarring or a benign nodule, and the report may recommend comparison images, follow-up imaging or another test.

Confirm that screening is appropriate for your age, smoking history and local programme criteria. Tell the imaging team if you might be pregnant, have difficulty lying flat or have had relevant chest scans before. You usually lie on a table that moves through the scanner while holding your breath briefly when instructed. The scan itself is quick and does not usually require an injection for screening, but follow the centre's preparation instructions.

Screening is for people without concerning symptoms and should not delay assessment of a health problem. Contact a clinician promptly for coughing up blood, severe or worsening breathlessness, persistent chest pain, unexplained weight loss or a cough that does not settle. Seek emergency help for sudden severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, collapse or crushing chest pain.
