Why is computer navigation for surgery used in scoliosis surgery?

The system combines preoperative images or images collected during the operation with tracking information from surgical instruments. This creates a live reference that can help the surgeon understand vertebral position, plan screw paths, and check implant placement while correcting the curve. It is particularly useful when the spine is rotated or its anatomy is altered by deformity.

Navigation supports surgical judgement; it does not operate independently and cannot remove every surgical risk. The surgeon may also use X-ray imaging, neuromonitoring, or direct anatomical checks depending on the case.

Ask whether navigation is recommended for your curve, which images will guide the plan, and whether additional imaging is needed. Discuss the intended correction, implants, blood-loss planning, hospital stay, and physiotherapy. Share previous spine operations, metal implants, allergies, and any new weakness or numbness before surgery.

After scoliosis surgery, report new or worsening weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe pain, wound drainage, fever, or increasing redness promptly. Sudden chest pain or serious breathing difficulty needs urgent help. A fall, new loss of balance, or sudden change in the surgical wound also warrants early contact with the care team.
