Why is cobalt-chrome alloy used in total knee replacement?

A total knee replacement resurfaces the worn ends of the thigh bone and shin bone and may replace the underside of the kneecap. Cobalt-chrome is commonly used in the femoral component because it can be shaped to reproduce the rounded surfaces that guide bending. A polyethylene insert sits between the metal parts and acts as the main bearing surface.

Ask your surgeon to explain the planned components, how they will be fixed to bone, and whether any part of the implant differs from the usual design. Arrange help with meals, transport, and stairs if needed. Prepare to use the walking aid and exercises exactly as instructed, because controlled movement helps restore strength and knee motion.

Seek prompt advice for a wound that becomes more painful, red, swollen, or leaky, or for fever and chills. Sudden calf swelling, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or a new inability to move or bear weight requires urgent assessment. Later, report persistent instability, increasing warmth, or pain that is worsening instead of gradually settling.
