Why is bone cement used in total knee replacement?

A total knee replacement reshapes the worn surfaces of the thigh bone and shin bone, and may also address the underside of the kneecap. The surgeon prepares these surfaces to match the replacement parts. Cement can fill the interface between a component and bone, then harden to hold that component in place. It can be used for selected parts rather than every part of the replacement. Fixation is only one part of the operation; alignment, ligament balance, wound healing, muscle recovery, and physiotherapy also influence function. Before surgery, provide a complete medicine list and mention dental concerns, allergies, previous operations, and any infection. Confirm which components will use cement and what walking instructions apply. After surgery, use the prescribed walking aid and exercises, protect the wound as directed, and keep follow-up visits. Increasing movement gradually helps the knee regain bending and strength; forcing a painful movement can irritate healing tissues.

Get urgent help for chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, or sudden painful swelling in a calf. Call the surgical team about fever, wound drainage, spreading redness, severe pain that is worsening, a cold or pale foot, or new difficulty moving the ankle. A sudden loss of weight-bearing ability should be assessed promptly.
