Why is an arthroscope used in rotator cuff repair?

The arthroscope is a narrow camera with a light. It can inspect the inside of the shoulder, the joint surface, the labrum and the underside of the rotator cuff. The image appears on a screen, helping the surgeon identify the tear and check for related problems.

Through additional small openings, instruments can remove inflamed tissue, smooth a rough area or prepare bone before anchors and sutures secure the tendon. The exact repair depends on the tear and the condition of the surrounding tissue.

Plan for the sling, dressing care and help with daily tasks after surgery. Keep the arm protected as instructed; early active lifting can strain a healing tendon. Physiotherapy usually progresses from protected movement to strength work, with timing tailored to the repair and your examination.

Report fever, increasing wound redness, drainage, uncontrolled pain, or new swelling in the arm. Seek urgent care for chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, or a hand that becomes cold, pale or persistently numb.

Ask which tendon is torn, whether the repair needs anchors, how long the sling is expected, and which exercises are allowed at each stage. Ask when you may drive, work overhead or return to sport.
