Why is an arthroscope used in knee arthroscopy?

An arthroscope is a slim tube with a camera and light. The surgeon places it through a small skin opening, then views the knee on a screen. This can show the joint surfaces, meniscus, ligaments and lining more directly than an outside examination alone.

The camera helps the surgeon confirm what is wrong and choose the appropriate treatment while the procedure is underway. Other small instruments can pass through nearby openings to smooth, remove, repair or assess tissue, depending on the finding.

Before surgery, tell the team about medicines, allergies and previous reactions to anaesthesia. Arrange the help and transport recommended by your hospital. Afterward, follow instructions about wound care, walking, exercises and keeping the knee supported. Swelling and stiffness can occur early in recovery, so progress should follow the rehabilitation plan rather than pain alone.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, new calf swelling or breathing difficulty. Seek urgent help for severe shortness of breath, chest pain, or a suddenly cold, pale or numb foot.
