Why is an arthroscope used in ACL reconstruction?

An arthroscope is a slim camera inserted through a small opening near the knee. Fluid helps clear the view, and images appear on a monitor. The surgeon can inspect the ACL area, cartilage, menisci and other joint surfaces rather than relying only on external examination or scans.

During reconstruction, the view helps the surgeon prepare the damaged ligament area, check the tunnel positions and place the graft within the joint. If a meniscus or cartilage problem is found, its treatment can be considered as part of the planned procedure. The camera supports decision-making, but it does not remove the need for careful examination and rehabilitation.

Before surgery, clarify the expected brace, crutches and weight-bearing instructions. Afterward, protect the incisions, take medicines as prescribed and complete the early exercises that restore knee extension, reduce swelling and wake up the thigh muscles. Avoid twisting, pivoting or testing the reconstructed knee until your surgeon or physiotherapist clears those movements. Keep scheduled reviews because progression depends on examination findings.

Call the surgical team for increasing redness, drainage, fever, worsening calf swelling or pain that is not controlled by the agreed plan. Seek urgent care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or a foot that becomes cold, pale, numb or unusually painful. A sudden pop, new instability or rapidly increasing knee swelling also deserves prompt advice.

Ask what the arthroscope showed, whether the meniscus or cartilage also needed attention, how the graft will be protected, and which milestones guide progression from assisted walking to strengthening and sport-specific work.
