Why is an allograft tendon used in ACL reconstruction?

An allograft comes from donated human tissue that has been screened and prepared for surgical use. It can spare the patient an additional incision and preserve their own hamstring or kneecap tendon for other needs. The surgeon selects a graft based on age, activity, knee anatomy, previous operations and reconstruction goals. Donor tissue has its own considerations, including incorporation and rehabilitation, so the choice requires an individual discussion.

Tell the surgeon about previous knee surgery, sport demands, medical conditions and medicines. Discuss graft alternatives, fixation, expected brace or crutch use and the physiotherapy stages. After the operation, protect the graft as instructed, attend rehabilitation and avoid returning to pivoting sport until strength, control and clinical milestones support progression.

Contact the surgical team for increasing swelling, wound drainage, fever, calf pain or a knee that becomes harder to move. Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, sudden leg swelling, or a foot that becomes cold, pale or numb.
